Le Petit Jardin
Le Petit Jardin celebrates Los Angeles in bloom with over thirty-five works of art from twenty-six Los Angeles artists, each focusing on a different aspect of nature to create a petit jardin, a little garden, for this gallery space within the urban context of Los Angeles. From a painting of an impossibly lush lawn, to photographs of a single flower, we see how we are connected to nature and how it plays a pivotal role in the landscape around us in the Los Angeles basin.
With the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct overseen by William Mulholland in 1913, water flowed from the Owens Valley in eastern California to Los Angeles. Despite the famous water wars and the farmer protests that ensued, for better or for worse, Los Angeles burgeoned.
Over time, Los Angeles’ natural environment became as diverse as its communities. With a year-round temperate climate, Los Angeles hosts a myriad of trees, plants, and flowers. Since Angelinos can plant and enjoy their gardens year-round, the result is a staggering array of gardens, which these artists have captured in their artworks.
This exhibition features painters and photographers inspired by the incredible variety of botanical life found in Southern California, from the water lilies at the Mission San Juan Capistrano, to the California Poppies, the state’s flower, which bloom in large fields in the Antelope Valley each spring. Found within the vast urban topography between these areas are specialty themed gardens, vivid desert wildflowers, and delicate representations of the region’s multiple microclimates.
Of the many types of gardens found in Los Angeles, artists Linda Kunik, founder of Plant it Forward, and Ann Summa, a photojournalist for the Los Angeles Times, documented and elevated the concept of the community garden. By using overlooked spaces, Angelinos are establishing roots in their communities, connecting with the land, and enjoying a bounty of fruits and vegetables.
Artists featured in this exhibit include Juna Amano, Terry Arena, Kate Davis Caldwell, Ellen Cantor, Jenelle Casarez, Ingrid Deitrich, Laura Ferreras, Renée Fox, Ginger Van Hook, Flora Kao, Linda Kunik, Krista Marlene, Patricia Meisels, Felicity Nove, Ofunne Obiamiwe, Anne Cheek La Rose, Gayle Garner Roski, Karrie Ross, Kuniko Ruch, Carol Spence, Ann Summa, Phil Tarley, Roger Thomas, Marjan Vayghan, Michael Verbenec, Marlene Sanaye Yamada, and Frank Zgonc.

"My work reflects the awe I experienced as a child wandering in my mother's and grandmother's flower beds, where everything seemed oversized, exuberant, and magical. Laura Ferreras
"My work represents an ongoing discourse about the interplay
between fact and fiction, with themes such as sexuality, domesticity,
post-feminism, and politics. This
discourse is presented within a hybridization of new technologies and
traditional materials. Typically my work starts in one medium and goes through
many different applications and transformations, including scale shifts and
focus. For example, I may begin by
working with video imagery, later phases might include adding digital effects,
which are exported into stills, and then printed on various materials, collaged,
re-photographed, re-printed, and finally painted. The result is one that engages and challenges the viewer to
question the materials used and the subject matter explored." Laura Ferreras, 2012

Karrie Ross
Los
Angeles native Karrie Ross, fine artist, shares her explorations into concepts
of energy creation, science, participation and being seen, as the underlying
influences of her art. Metaphorical representations that create a 'safe' place
for the viewer to experience a flow, the growing of energy in balance, a never
ending spiral momentum of up and out...encouraging their connection from
interaction with the artwork... discovering that they are part of a bigger
whole. She likes to works in both watercolor and oil as they seem "more
alive" to her as well as pen & ink or pencil "spiral
doodles". She poses to you a question... "What is YOUR energy telling
the world?" and invites you to join with, and experience hers in the art
she creates.

Sanaye Yamada
Sanaye graduated from UCSD with a degree in
computer science. She was a
management consultant in software development and analytics to large
corporations. After the birth of her third child, she retired from consulting, took
a painting class, and became fully passionate about creating fine art. Sanaye’s art education is primarily
self-taught. Her primary focus is
abstract acrylic paintings on canvas.
Her work has been featured in gallery exhibits, private and public
collections, and has appeared on the television show, CSI: Miami. Sanaye’s technique uses multiple
translucent, watery layers to produce unexpected results. This element of
chance makes each painting truly unique. Sanaye often views her painting
process as analogous to life -- learning from and celebrating the unexpected
surprises.

I am a painter who tends to work in series. The works that I am presenting to you are from a painting series entitled, Based On A True Story. These works are rooted in depicting the natural landscape and the world around me by interpreting Polaroid photographs into small paintings that, much like a Polarioid, can be held in your hand. Although not depicting flowers or blooms per se, the paintings reflect a lush greenery found in an east coast summer.

LINDA KUNIK- BIOGRAPHY
|
Read Linda's Blog at plantitforwardla.blogspot.com
Beginning as a watercolorist
and landscape painter, Linda Kunik wanted to work more conceptually, so she returned
to school to receive her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design. Thinking about issues of global
awareness, Linda’s first body of abstract paintings dealt with the environment;
more specifically the deforestation of rain forests. It was within this body of work that she began to push the
boundaries of preconceived notions of painting while attempting to reconcile
abstraction with social and political issues. Her Deforestation and
the Land series developed into paintings of global warming
and imbalances within ocean plant life.
As her work progressed, Linda started to see a broader picture of
causality. She questioned: how and why do things happen - in the
environment, society, governments, and everything we do? Her Things
Fall Apart series reflected these
conceptual issues. Wanting a more
positive approach, she began an investigation of a sustainable agricultural
practice with the barter system, referencing the patron/artist relationship, while
engaging community and examining the politics and cultural aspects of food. Plant It Forward-the starving artist project
is beginning its fourth year and was the inspiration for her current project, Ripe, which attempts to show tomatoes in
a different context and as a metaphor for how we live our lives. Linda
was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Beverly Hills, California in 1978,
where she currently resides.

Renée Fox makes mixed media paintings based on natural found objects. The paintings use traditional painting and drawing techniques to portray a sensually feminine, idealized interpretation of nature, often by changing singular floral subjects into sexualized icons. Born in Frederick, Maryland, Renee attended the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington D.C. and graduated from Otis College of Art and Design after relocating to Los Angeles, California. She has exhibited internationally and completed several independent curatorial projects including "Reclaiming", 2003, an exhibition of Otis alumni at the historic location of the old Otis administrative building in downtown, LA and "Reclaiming: Intergeneration", same location with Jenée Misraje and Kate Harding. Fox is currently director of the Beacon Arts Building in Inglewood, California and organizes the annual Inglewood Open Studios.
